The Communist Party of India (CPI) is the oldest communist party in India. The CPI was founded from the foundation conference in Kanpur on 26 December 1925.

Before the party formation, there were many small communist groups were formed in Bombay (led by S.A. Dange), Madras (led by Singaravelu Chettiar), United Provinces (led by Shaukat Usmani), Punjab, Sindh (led by Ghulam Hussain) and Bengal (led by Muzaffar Ahmed). Outside India, in Tashkent also a seven membered group was formed by the initiative of M.N. Roy.

Finally the Kanpur conference was held on 25-28 December and the Communist Party of India name was adopted. S.V. Ghate and J.P. Bagerhatta were elected as the first General Secretaries of CPI from the foundation conference though S.V. Ghate ultimately continued as the General Secretary.

CPI actively participated in Indian freedom struggle and most of their frontline leadership were arrested in Meerut conspiracy case by the Britishers.

CPI with its existence in each nook and corner of the country today, continues the fight for the socialism.
